The Wind River Meridian, established in 1875, was run to survey the Wind River Indian Reservation that had been created by the federal government in 1868. The reservation covers approximately 3,500 square miles in west central Wyoming. The initial point is near the Fort Washakie, Wyoming, lying in 43°00'41.05"N latitude, 108°48'51.61"W longitude. Ranges were run both east and west of the Wind River meridian, and survey townships were run both north and south of the Wind River principal base line.
