Congress Lands West of the Miami River lies west of the Great Miami River, and south of the Greenville Treaty Line. The original survey in 1796 contained a triangular shaped slice of land, now located in Indiana, that extended to the Greenville line as it ran from Fort Recovery to opposite the mouth of the Kentucky River. The Ohio Enabling Act of 1802 established Ohio’s western boundary as the First Principal Meridian north from the mouth of the Great Miami. Ranges were numbered east and west of the meridian, those in Ohio being “East of the First Meridian.” Townships were numbered south to north with irregularities caused in part by the surveyors basing the numbering on the Great Miami River rather than a referenced base line.
